Peter Cleary | Senior Consultant
Peter has over 30 years’ experience in the oil and gas sector with much of his career focused on Asia Pacific countries. His leadership, commercial and strategic experience can be applied to a broad range of industry sectors.
Peter commenced his career in the resource sector in 1982 after qualifying as lawyer working on exploration, project financing and project development with MIM Holdings.
On joining BP in Australia as a resources lawyer, Peter was soon engaged in BP’s oil, gas and coal business as well as LNG shipping structures for the North West Shelf LNG project.
Peter’s international journey started in 1987 in Indonesia with BP where he found his second passion: working in Asia. His role included the structuring of a chemical joint venture with Indonesian and Japanese partners. A move to London saw him move from the legal world to a commercial role in marketing petrochemical technologies in China, Thailand and Korea.
From 1995 the LNG and gas businesses were his main focus areas. His experiences are varied from establishing LNG trading teams, project development, bidding and providing the leadership for multi discipline teams and playing a role in BP’s LNG worldwide leadership group. He led the North West Shelf joint venture through the first LNG deliveries to China and the recontracting of volumes to Japanese customers. He is respected internationally in LNG circles, but particularly in Asia.
The executive role at Santos saw him reporting to the CEO, participating on Board discussions and presenting to the external community whether they be investors, the media or industry specialists.
