Lean Special Interest Group

The Lean Special Interest Group was created to increase awareness and proficiency in continuous improvement practices amongst Australian companies and to support staff involved in leading lean management initiatives within their organisations.


The ultimate aim of the Lean Special Interest Group is to improve competitiveness of Australian companies through skills development, efficiency gains and product quality improvements. The Group is open to companies within Australian industry and is expected to be of particular interest, but not limited, to organisations engaged in manufacturing and food processing. Lean Special Interest Group networking events are run across Australia.

Content and Organisation

These lean networking events typically include a site tour and presentation, followed by networking for attendees. Group meetings are facilitated by Shinka Management, and supported by the Australian Industry Group and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia.

Previous Events

Jumbo Vision – Adelaide – 8 December 2015 – Isuzu Tokai virtual factory tour and CADwalk demonstration. Live broadcast from the Isuzu Gifu Service Center and focus on facility design.

Jumbo Vision – Perth – 24 November 2015 – CADwalk facility and Metal One Isuzu steel coil handling centre. Focus of this event is facility layout design and 5S.

Schneider Electric – Brisbane – 15 September 2015 – Schneider Electric Eagle Farm Site Tour. Visit will include “Engineered to Order” manufacturing facility and Brisbane Distribution Centre. A presentation will be given on the Schneider Production System.

Absolute Balustrades – Perth – 30 September 2015 – Absolute Balustrades Site Tour. Details to be announced shortly. The event will include a presentation and discussion on Absolute Balustrades’ lean journey to date.

REA Group – Melbourne – March 2014 – Site visit to REA Group corporate headquarters – Guest presentation by Mr Richard Durnall, Chief Technology Officer at REA GROUP.

Kavanagh Industries – Sydney – February 2014 – Kavanagh Industries sheet metal ducting production facility – Presentation on November 2013 Lean Japan Tour.

Lion – Brisbane – February 2014 – Lion Castlemaine Perkins XXXX Brewery tour – Presentation on Lion’s Manufacturing Excellence (MEX) Journey.
