Industry Briefing | The Pros and Cons of Industrialized Wooden Housing in Japan
Seminar Overview
In the wake of a series of high-profile failures across the United States and the United Kingdom — most notably Katerra in North America, alongside multiple factory-based housing ventures in the UK — the global housing industry is being forced to confront some uncomfortable but necessary questions. What kind of factories should we really be building? Are current business models for industrialised housing genuinely viable? And, perhaps most importantly, are we truly satisfied with today’s mass-production approach to housing?
This expert-led discussion invites participants to step back from purely technical consideration and engage in a deeper, more reflective conversation about the future of residential construction. Led by a visiting Japanese expert, the session will explore how architectural philosophy, long-term thinking, and production system design intersect in Japan’s approach to industrialised housing.
Rather than an academic or data-heavy presentation, this gathering is designed as a catalyst for discussion. Through consideration of Japan’s successes and failures with its approach to prefabricated and modular housing systems, with a particular focus on timber manufacturing, it aims to stimulate meaningful dialogue — from the values that shape housing design through to the realities of factory management and sustainable industrialisation.
